Elon Musk: SpaceX Moon City Now Priority Over Mars

Global – February 15, 2026 – In a groundbreaking update shared on his platform X, Elon Musk revealed that SpaceX has strategically shifted its primary focus from long-term Mars settlement to rapidly establishing a self-growing, self-sustaining city on the Moon. This move, announced on February 8, 2026, underscores the urgency of securing humanity’s future beyond Earth, with the Moon offering a dramatically faster path to an independent off-world civilization.

Musk’s detailed explanation in his original post highlights the practical advantages:

“For those unaware, SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years.

The mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars.

It is only possible to travel to Mars when the planets align every 26 months (six month trip time), whereas we can launch to the Moon every 10 days (2 day trip time). This means we can iterate much faster to complete a Moon city than a Mars city.

That said, SpaceX will also strive to build a Mars city and begin doing so in about 5 to 7 years, but the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster.”

He further elaborated in follow-up statements that the core motivation is safeguarding long-term survival against potential Earth-based catastrophes that could halt resupply efforts:

  • “The priority shift is because I’m worried that a natural or manmade catastrophe stops the resupply ships coming from Earth, causing the colony to die out.”
  • “We can make the Moon city self-growing in less than 10 years, but Mars will take 20+ years due to the 26 month iteration cycle. That is what matters most.”
  • “The Moon is faster to make a self-growing city. If civilization continues to grow, we will figure out the universe. If not, nothing else matters.”
  • Musk also addressed resource concerns, noting: “There is enough carbon and hydrogen on the Moon to build a self-growing civilization.”

While Mars colonization is not abandoned—Musk reaffirmed plans to pursue it in parallel, potentially accelerated by lunar advancements and revenue from activities like orbital AI data centers—the Moon now represents the “critical path” for achieving a truly independent, expanding human presence off-planet.

This pivot aligns with SpaceX’s broader ambitions, including leveraging lunar infrastructure for efficient launches, resource utilization (such as polar water ice for propellants), and supporting massive orbital projects. It also ties into ongoing developments like uncrewed lunar landings targeted for 2027 and integration with AI-driven initiatives.

Musk’s announcement has ignited global debate on the future of space exploration, with experts noting how the Moon’s proximity enables rapid prototyping and risk reduction before tackling the harsher challenges of Mars.

World Report Press will continue monitoring this historic redirection in humanity’s multi-planetary journey. The Moon is emerging as the stepping stone to the stars—faster, more feasible, and essential for civilization’s long-term survival. 🌕🚀
