Shocking Double Homicide: Hollywood Legend Rob

Los Angeles, December 16, 2025 â€“ In a tragedy that has stunned Hollywood and the nation, acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, producer and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, 68-70, were found stabbed to death in their luxurious Brentwood residence on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has classified the incident as a double homicide, with no signs of forced entry. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Sunday night and booked on suspicion of murder. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed Monday that Nick is “responsible” for the deaths and is being held without bail (initially set at $4 million before revocation). The case is expected to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office today for formal charging decisions.

Sources indicate the couple suffered multiple stab wounds, including reports of throats being slit. Their daughter, Romy Reiner, 28, reportedly discovered the bodies around 3:30-3:40 p.m. and alerted authorities.

Witnesses report that the night before, on December 13, Rob and Nick attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, where the pair engaged in a loud argument that alarmed guests. Nick’s behavior was described as erratic.

Nick Reiner, a screenwriter who co-wrote his father’s 2015 film Being Charlie â€“ a semi-autobiographical story inspired by his own battles with drug addiction and homelessness – has a documented history of substance abuse issues beginning in his teens.

Rob Reiner’s illustrious career spanned decades:

  • Iconic role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family (1971-1979), earning two Emmy Awards.
  • Directing timeless classics including This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Misery (1990), A Few Good Men (1992), and his final project, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025).

A vocal progressive activist and outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, Reiner leaves behind a profound legacy in film and public service.

President Trump’s Inflammatory Response

On Monday, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, describing the deaths as “very sad” but blaming them on Reiner’s “massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with… TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME (TDS).” Trump called Reiner a “tortured and struggling” figure whose “raging obsession” allegedly drove others “CRAZY,” implying it contributed to the tragedy – despite police naming Nick as the sole suspect.

The post sparked bipartisan condemnation, with Republicans like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene calling it a “family tragedy” unrelated to politics, and Rep. Thomas Massie deeming it “inappropriate.” Trump later defended his remarks, stating he was “not a fan” of Reiner.

Outpouring of Grief from Hollywood and Beyond

Tributes flooded in from stars and leaders:

  • Former President Barack Obama: “Heartbroken… Rob’s achievements gave us cherished stories… rooted in belief in the goodness of people.”
  • Stephen King: “Horrified and saddened… Rest in peace, Rob.”
  • Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride): “No words…”
  • Billy Crystal and Larry David were seen visiting the home, appearing distraught.
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom: “Heartbroken… Rob was a big-hearted genius.”
  • Former VP Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi also expressed devastation.

The Reiner family issued a statement: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division continues the investigation. This devastating family tragedy marks a somber end to the life of one of Hollywood’s most beloved figures.
