Poland’s Week in Review: Communist Party Banned
World Report Press | 8 December 2025
Poland’s first week of December 2025 was intense: a historic court ruling outlawed the Communist Party, two Ukrainian nationals were charged with Russian-backed sabotage on a key railway line, the women’s handball delivered early World Championship fireworks, and cinemas posted their best December opening weekend in six years.
Major News & Events
Communist Party Officially Banned (3 December) The Constitutional Tribunal ruled the Polish Communist Party unconstitutional under Article 13, immediately revoking its registration. The party, which had around 5 000 members, can no longer operate legally. PiS celebrated the verdict as the “final decommunisation”, while left-wing commentators called it “a dangerous precedent for freedom of association”.
Railway Sabotage: Two Ukrainians Charged (1–7 December) Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that two Ukrainian citizens, allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence via Belarus, were formally charged for the 17 November explosion on the Warsaw–Lublin line that disrupted weapons shipments to Ukraine. Both suspects have fled to Minsk; Poland has issued European Arrest Warrants and requested extradition.
Northern Floods Heavy rain caused the worst flooding in Podlasie in six years. Almost 5 000 people were evacuated around Białystok; emergency services worked non-stop for four days.
Christmas Markets Open Warsaw Old Town, Kraków Main Square and Gdańsk’s Long Market all launched their 2025 Christmas markets on 1 December. Kraków’s traditional szopka (nativity scene) competition crowned its winners on 7 December.
Politics
Tusk–Merz Summit in Berlin (1 December) Polish PM Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz agreed to speed up the release of €137 billion in frozen EU recovery funds and deepen defence cooperation, including joint air-defence projects.
President-Elect Nawrocki Threatens Vetoes Karol Nawrocki, who takes office in August 2026, warned he will veto the government’s public-media reform bill, calling it “an attack on press freedom”. The move could trigger another constitutional crisis.
Confidence Vote The Sejm passed a confidence vote in the Tusk government 240–190 on 5 December, but the coalition’s majority is now razor-thin after two MPs defected to the opposition.
Sports
Women’s Handball World Championship (Rotterdam & Germany) Poland crushed Angola 35–20 in their opening match and beat hosts Germany 28–24 on 5 December. The team is now unbeaten and on course for the quarter-finals.
World Cup 2026 Play-off Path Secured A 1–1 home draw with the Netherlands on 5 December guaranteed Poland a play-off spot. They will face one of the Nations League quarter-final losers in March 2026.
